Why is it important to test my blood sugar?

Testing your blood sugar can feel like a waste of time and certainly can be a nuisance.  Some might feel getting the blood test for the Hemoglobin A1c (3 month average blood sugar) is enough to manage the diabetes.  Using the A1c data alone to guide the diabetes treatment decisions is like planning a road trip without a map or GPS!  You know where you want to go, but you do not have the turn by turn directions.  Daily testing tells you (and your caregiver) where the problems are and the best way to solve them.  It could be as simple as changing a eating habit or moving a medication to a different time in the day.

Remember, the A1c will never reach the desired goal if we don't take the bumps out of the road!
