Does health care role or experience have any effect on the clinician's perception of a culture of safety? In a recent edition of the American Journal of Infection Control, researchers surveyed employees at 5 hospitals of varying demographic characteristics. Experience levels did not affect safety scores as much as roles; results of health care technicians (PCTs, lab and radiology personnel) indicated a lower awareness of organizational safety efforts and lower culture of safety scores. Administration had the highest scores. The authors noted there were greater differences in item scores among hospitals than either role or experience; safety culture may be more influenced by workplace characteristics than anything else.
