Sometimes, we perceive ourselves differently than reality. This was the message from a new study published in the Journal of Infection Control and Hospital Epidemiology. Healthcare providers (90% female and 51% nurses) in a Thai hospital self-reported their own compliance with hand hygiene at 82%, while direct observation compliance rates were only 23%. Clinical encounters with the highest compliance rates were ICU patients and imunocompromised patients. The most common causes given by the clinicians for not washing their hands were forgetfulness, high acuity on the units, and the belief that their hands are already clean enough. 6% actually admitted they were lazy.
