In the opinion of a recent JAMA article, librarians are essential members of the health care team. The vast amount of research and information technology that clinicians try to use in their daily practice can be overwhelming. In addition, academic health science libraries are under strain from decreasing resources and higher costs for publications. A skilled librarian can help clinicians navigate these searches for evidenced-based practice. In addition, centers that embed librarians into quality and patient safety departments report positive effects; 88% of participants in one study reported learning new information skills from the librarian. Librarians can also assist with patient and family education; providing clinicians educational resources. MUSC is on the front line of this trend with our own Director of Evidence Based Practice, Elizabeth Crabtree
