It Takes a Team |
|
Preventing falls in the hospital has traditionally has been thought of a nursing concern; however, according to a study published in the Journal of Nursing Administration, a multidisciplinary multimodal approach must be used. Using elements of the Institute for Healthcare Falls Toolkit, leaders initiated many of the familiar interventions, including fall risk assessments, bed and chair alarms, and nursing hourly rounding. In addition, the organization's education and marketing departments were brought in to help communicate to all caregivers the theme of "It Takes a Team" to keep the hospital environment safe. Finally, the nurse managers that had falls on their units that week met with the CNO on Friday morning to review the events. After all of these interventions, fall rates were below benchmark 90% of the time. |
