Note pads to improve communication |

Patient centered care is not only the right thing to do, it improves outcomes. A new tool, using a decidedly low-tech approach, was found to be helpful; researchers at the University of Michigan in Ann Arbor used a simple notepad next to the bed, titled "Dear Doctor". This notepad included a sample question and 3 suggested categories for patients to write their own questions concerning diagnoses and treatments, tests and procedures, and medications. Over a 3 month period, 65% of patients in the intervention group took notes, compared to 22% of the control group, and 93% of the patients using the notepads said they would use such a device again in the future.
