Prioritization

With so many targets to focus improvement efforts in patient safety, how do we prioritize? This question was asked in the recent edition of Academic Medicine. Authors from Massachusetts General Hospital describe a process utilizing organizational goal-setting theory, which incorporates 8 steps:

 

  1. Establish a data hub for quality and safety signals and refresh annually
  2. Identify themes through qualitative data review
  3. Draft annual goals
  4. Apply filters to help prioritize goals
  5. Vet goals across institution
  6. Articulate key tactics for each goal
  7. Approve goals and performance metrics
  8. Plan implementation and track progress
