VTE Prevention

Venous thromboembolism (VTE), a term that describes blood clots in the legs or the lungs, is a significant cause of patient morbidity and mortality. Despite widespread efforts to reduce this preventable condition, it's prevalence continues to plague many medical centers. This month, the Cochrane Library published a review of 55 studies of interventions designed to increase the implementation of appropriate thromboprophylaxis. The most effective strategies were multimodal, including computerized alerts, reminders, and education. MUSC will be implementing evidence-based VTE prevention order sets with inpatient EPIC.
