Assessing Communication in Surgeons

Although surgeons spend many years perfecting their technical skills used in surgery, the non-technical skills of communication, team work, and decision-making highly correlate with poor surgical outcomes. Researchers in Denmark have developed the Non-Technical Skills for Surgeons tool, which assesses non-technical skills in a standardized video-recorded simulation scenario. This tool assesses situational awareness, communication and teamwork, decision-making and leadership with high interrater reliability. The authors suggest this tool can be used in surgical training programs and continuing education.
