Great Eyeballs of Fire

Fire in the operating room is a rare but dangerous occurrence. A recent case report from Australia illustrates that these events happen without warning and often during situations that no one could have imagined. A 64 yo female had surgery for bilateral lower eyelid cystic lesions under local anesthetic. She had artificial eyelash extensions, but did not volunteer this information, nor was it noticed by the surgeon. During the use of electro cautery, the patient's eyelashes burst into flames. The surgeon was able to blow out the fire and the patient only suffered mild first degree burns. In this case, no oxygen was involved, although oxygen is often involved in this type of thermal mishap. Read more about how to prevent procedural fires.
