Dementia

 

One group of patients at particular risk for adverse events is those with dementia. These patients are at higher risk for falls, pressure ulcers, poor nutrition and immobility. They may suffer from delirium, which is often not recognized. Catheter associated urinary tract infections are also higher in these patients, especially if catheters are used for incontinence. Interventions that should be considered in treating patients with dementia include:

  • Involvement of the patient's family
  • Routine use of cognitive screening
  • Staff training on geriatric assessment
