A hospital in California recently informed almost 900 patients they may have been exposed to infectious risk by inadequately cleaned endoscopes. This is not an isolated problem; flexible endoscopes can become heavily contaminated and are difficult to clean. Biofilm, which occurs when microorganisms stick to each other on a surface, can be very resistant to antibacterial agents. Proper disinfectant technique must be followed. Although some devices may not be adequately processed, this does not necessarily result in infection, as shown from a study of Veteran's Administration patients.
