NSQIP

Hospitals that participate in the American College of Surgeons National Surgical Quality Improvement Program (NSQIP) have a lower mortality rate than other hospitals, according to results recently presented at the recent NSQIP conference. Analyzing over 1.8 million patients at 227 hospitals, researchers demonstrated lower 30-day mortality rates (OR 0.73[0.70-0.76] versus 0.81[0.78-0.83]) and one-year mortality rates (OR 0.84[0.81-0.87] versus 0.90[0.88-0.92]) than non-ACS NSQIP hospitals. Both groups improved their performance between 1995 and 2009, however, the NSQIP group improved at a faster rate. MUSC does participate in Adult and Pediatric NSQIP, the medical directors for which are Karl Byrne, Bruce Crookes, and Andre Hebra; hats off to all of their hard work on our metrics.
