Speaking Up Stars

Speaking up is a critical component of patient safety, however, many healthcare workers do not do it. The Silent Treatment, a paper co-authored by AACN, AORN and Vital Smarts reviewed 2 studies, the latest completed in 2010, indicating that < 30% of nurses speak up with their concerns. Hospitals with Magnet Recognition score significantly higher than non-Magnet hospitals in speaking up. Recently, MUSC RNs Amy Hanna and Sheryl Ciccarelli of 8 East won the July Safety Star award for speaking up when they realized the team did not have all the information needed to safely complete a procedure. Thanks to Amy and Sheryl for speaking up for patient safety!
