Oncology Events

The frequency of adverse events for surgical oncology patients have increased in the last 10 years, according to a review of >300,000 patients in the Nationwide Inpatient Sample database. They found 13% of patients experienced at least 1 potentially avoidable adverse event during a hospitalization, which were associated with higher mortality and length of stay. Although adverse events have increased, there was a concomitant decrease in the rate of failure to rescue and a decrease in overall mortality. There was no clear etiology for these discrepant findings, however, explanations may include a change in case mix with an older/sicker population, and improvements in the methods of coding and identifying adverse events.
