Flooring and Safety

As we look for ways to improve patient and employee safety, one area that is often overlooked is flooring. An extensive review recently published in the Health Environments Research and Design Journal examined studies focusing on health care acquired infections, falls and fall related injuries, and environmental noise. Although there were few robust studies available, carpet was recommended over other floor surfaces. Although carpet is perceived to be more difficult to clean, it minimizes airborne bacteria and reduces the transmission of pathogens to people. Carpet was also recommended for decreasing falls and environmental noise levels.
