OR Conflict

Interpersonal conflict negatively effects communication and patient safety. In an attempt to create a conflict management educational program for surgeons, researchers conducted focus groups at 5 academic medical centers to determine sources of conflict in the operating room (OR). One prominent finding was that system issues played a large role in OR interpersonal conflict. These issues included function and composition of the teams, training of these team members, equipment management, and administrative leadership. The authors suggest conflict management must go beyond strategies to improve interpersonal communication, and focus on underlying systems issues.
