Team Training and Safety Culture

Can team training improve the culture of safety? In a study of 37 critical access hospitals (rural hospitals with ≤25 beds and separated by 35 miles), those that adopted TeamSTEPPS reported significantly higher results on the AHRQ Hospital Survey of Patient Safety Culture. TeamSTEPPS is a team training program designed by AHRQ and the US Department of Defense to improve the skills of leadership, situation monitoring, mutual support and communication. Although it is unclear if these same results could be produced at larger hospitals such as MUSC, TeamSTEPPS has been shown to improve staff perceptions of teamwork and communication. |
