| Cut the CAUTI |

A community Connecticut hospital reduced catheter associated urinary tract infection (CAUTI) rates in half over 3 years by using a nurse driven protocol. As published in the American Journal of Infection Control, the protocol included criteria for catheter insertion in CPOE, a house wide catheter maintenance protocol which included a nurse driven removal protocol, and a requirement for physicians to document continued indications for use. Results in the institution varied; the telemetry unit decreased catheter use by 75% while labor and delivery only decreased catheter use by 4%. Overall CAUTI rates fell by 70%.
