Radiation Risks

We all know radiation can be dangerous, but its use in diagnostic imaging procedures can save lives. How much is too much, and when is it medically unnecessary? It is estimated that radiation from CT scans in the US may be responsible for 29,000 future cancer cases, and the US utilizes CT scans more than other countries. According to a report in the online safety magazine InSight, 6 opportunities should be considered to improve radiation safety.

  1. Adhere to evidence-based guidelines to reduce radiation exposure
  2. Pre-screen before using ionizing radiation for diagnostic imaging
  3. Identify and mitigate reported risks
  4. Generate and track historical radiation exposure data
  5. Use decision support with alerts for order entry
  6. Increase public awareness of radiation exposure risks and benefits
