Alarm fatigue is a hot topic in Patient Safety, after the April release of a Joint Commission Sentinel Event Alert. Too many alarms can disrupt the clinician's usual workflow and result in errors due to distraction, omission, or inattention and can also lead staff to disable alarms. Device manufacturers are looking at ways to improve their technology and decrease false alarms. Another way to look at this problem is to decrease unnecessary monitoring. Researchers examined ECG monitoring and found most of ECG alarms were false positives, but they also discovered that 26% of these patients did not have an indication for monitoring in the first place!
