National Time Out Day |
|
Today is National Time Out Day, organized by the Association of perOperative Registered Nurses (AORN) and the Joint Commission to promote the use of this important pre-procedural check list. Time Outs are just one part of the Universal Protocol, which is designed to prevent wrong site, wrong person and wrong procedure surgery. First, a pre-procedural check is done, verifying patient identification and availability of necessary surgical equipment and lab/radiology data. Next, the site of the procedure is marked. Finally the time out occurs immediately before the procedure is started. All team members must stop what they are doing and verify all information.
