Healthcare's use of checklists, which originated in the aviation industry, has increased in recent years, most notably in the operating room. Can checklists be used for other processes, such as ECG interpretation? A study published in Advances in Health Sciences Education recruited medical students, general medicine residents and cardiology fellows to analyze 10 ECGs. Participants were asked to analyze the ECGs as they normally would, then to check their interpretation with a checklist. Not surprisingly, the novices made the most initial errors, but all groups were able to use the checklist to identify and correct misidentification in interpretation. Checklists are a promising technique to enhance accuracy of diagnostic tests, such as ECGs. |
