Measuring the Measurements |

The Robert Wood Johnson Foundation has published a report that examines the utilization of performance data in health care. We all are familiar with the increasing number of metrics that we must monitor; many of which are required by regulatory agencies such as CMS and the Joint Commission. How effective are these metrics in changing outcomes? Is sufficient rigor utilized in developing our measurement systems? The authors conclude that after substantial investment in improving the underlying science of performance measurement we must be strategic in their use.
