Safety Must-Haves |
|
What are the important components of a hospital safety program? Dr. Michael McKenna, Vice President of medical management and CMO of Advocate Lutheran General Hospital in Park Ridge, Ill recently shared his thoughts of 5 must-haves for hospital safety. First, safety must be a core value, not a project. It should be on everyone's radar, not just when an event occurs. Safety priorities should come from senior leadership. Safety events must be reported, so the organization knows what to work on. Organizations must focus on transparency, and lessons learned from events should be widely shared. Finally, events should be shared with our patients and families. Not only is it better for them to know what happened, the organization can learn from them, too. MUSC will be demonstrating the first 2 of these "must-haves" as we start Patient Safety Rounds in the adult inpatient areas next week.
