Just Culture

MUHA is implementing a "Just Culture" over the course of 2013. A Just Culture is an approach to human behavior, that balances accountability with the recognition that humans can and do make mistakes. A Just Culture manages behavior across organizations, regardless of job description, rank, or role.

You will be hearing more about a Just Culture and what it means for you and MUSC. For more information, view the FAQs or visit justculture.org.

Time to Start Goals Discussion

Dear MUSC Medical Staff,Dr. Cawley

Last week, we had our monthly physician leader meeting to update leaders on current issues within the medical center. The presentation given by Danielle Scheurer, Bart Sachs, Mark Lyles, and Chris Rees is available here.

One of the most important points from this presentation is that the 2013-2014 academic/fiscal year goals process between the medical center, Practice Plan, and College of Medicine is tightly linked.

Physician and administrative leaders, as well as individual physicians in similar areas, should commence discussions about goals for the next year. Every medical director and service contract is associated with an administrative leader in the medical center, as well as to different departments in the College of Medicine. If this is not known to you, do not hesitate to contact me or Bart Sachs to obtain further clarification. Goals for all medical center medical directors and service contracts are preliminarily due June 13 for an initial review. All goals must be finalized by June 30, 2013.

I have learned throughout my career that goal setting is both a science and an art. The science part involves selecting an appropriate metric. The art aspect is associated with understanding how that metric is moved over time. Goal setting is accomplished by having a series of thoughtful conversations among individuals with responsibility for that goal. The best goals are a reasonable stretch from the current year and have at least a monthly metric to follow throughout the year.

If you need any help in goal setting, do not hesitate to reach out to Chris Rees. Chris is part of the Leadership Evaluation Team, which oversees the goals process.

Thank you for the great care you provide every day!

Sincerely,

Patrick J. Cawley, MD
Executive Director/CEO, Medical Center
Vice President for Clinical Operations, University
