Resident Incentive Plan

Starting July 2013, all residents/fellows at MUSC will be eligible to receive a financial incentive for improving care quality for their patients.

Each resident/fellow program has been asked to pick 1 quality metric to improve upon for the 2013-2014 academic year. If that program achieves their goal, all residents in the program will receive their financial bonus. Each program is encouraged to pick a standard metric, but some programs will need to pick a specialty-focused metric. For more details on the metrics and the incentive program, view the FAQs, handout and common goals or contact Dr. Danielle Scheurer.

The Journey to Nursing Magnet

Dear MUSC Medical Staff,Dr. Cawley

As part of our Mission 2015 strategic intent to become a top 25 academic medical center in the nation, we have made nursing Magnet

status a key part of this journey.

Magnet is a nursing certification program developed by the American Nurses Credentialing Center (ANCC). It is awarded to organizations that have completed the certification requirements, which focus on quality patient care, nursing excellence and innovations in professional nursing practice. Only about 6% of hospitals nationwide have achieved Magnet status. It is a rigorous process and one that must engage all nurses at MUSC Medical Center.

MUSC started the Magnet journey in January 2012 and if everything stays on the timeline, we expect Magnet review by the ANCC in fall 2014.

Quality outcomes are an important part of this process. We must demonstrate consistent improvement over time and must exceed benchmarks. A scorecard for monitoring has been developed and is reviewed closely through our medical center quality structure. Teams are working on the opportunities for improvement. This scorecard can be found along with the other quality reports on the Clinical Effectiveness and Patient Safety website.

If you have any questions about the Magnet program, do not hesitate to contact our chief nursing officer, Marilyn Schaffner.

Thank you for the great care you provide every day!

Sincerely,

Patrick J. Cawley, MD
Executive Director/CEO, Medical Center
Vice President for Clinical Operations, University

Patient Safety Rounds

One of the most effective weapons in the patient safety arsenal is Patient Safety Rounds.  Originating in 2001 at the Brigham and Women's Hospital as Leadership WalkRounds, published reports of this intervention have shown improvement in safety culture and risk reduction.

MUSC began Patient Safety Rounds in the Children's Hospital last year, with great success.
Starting June 5th, rounds will begin in all other inpatient areas

IMPROVE Expanding to University

The University's Finance, Operations and Engineering & Facilities Units began working with the MUHA Performance Improvement Department last July. Sixteen leaders completed the IMPROVE Advanced course, and with recommendations from their Chiefs, selected three IMPROVE projects. This issue of the IMPROVE newsletter is dedicated to these teams and the efforts put forth in their projects.
