Magnet and Mortality Reduction

Hospitals that have achieved Magnet recognition from the American Nurses Credentialing center have lower mortality and failure to rescue rates than non-magnet hospitals, according to a new study. Data was analyzed from 56 Magnet and 508 non-Magnet hospitals in 4 states; Magnet hospitals had 14% lower odds of mortality and 12% lower odds of failure to rescue for surgical patients. The authors suggest this could be attributed to highly qualified nurses practicing in a supportive environment. In addition, hospitals that choose to apply for Magnet recognition may have a culture that encourages quality improvement and patient safety. MUSC continues its Journey to Magnet recognition via MUSC Nursing Excellence. Strategies include identifying fall and pressure ulcer champions at the unit level, encouraging nurses to obtain nursing certification in their specialty and developing unit-based councils to give nurses a voice in practice improvements. Our CNO Dr. Marilyn Schaffner is also leading an initiative to create a healthy work environment by eradicating lateral violence.
