July

Although some published reports dispute this, it is a common belief that housestaff turnover at the beginning of July has an effect on patient care. Incoming interns' uneven experiences / clinical skills was the subject of a recent study at Northwest University, which examined the role of simulation training to enhance their skills. "Intern boot camp", composed of small-group teaching sessions, deliberate practice and individualized feedback, was completed by 47 interns. Compared to historical controls, boot camp interns performed significantly better on physical exams, procedural performance and communication skills. Also of note, there was no correlation to participants' scores and prior experience or self-confidence. Simulation training is commonly used at MUSC to enhance our resident's skills prior to July start dates.
