A HIT to Safety?
|
|
"Meaningful Use" is a phrase many MUSC employees have heard. It refers to the government's push to get healthcare organizations to utilize health information technology (HIT) to improve patient outcomes. However, use of this technology can also be associated with risks to patient safety. A report from ECRI found 171 different types of events associated with harm or risk of harm due to HIT issues. Over half involved a medication management system, including errors with CPOE, internal pharmacy errors and medication administration errors. Other sources of error included documentation issues and lab mix-ups. Half of the errors were traced back to human interaction with the system (such as pulling up the incorrect patient), the other half to poorly designed or poorly functioning systems (such as connections, malfunctions, interfaces, etc). As we expand our use and reliance on HIT, mitigating these inherent risks has to be a top priority.
