SBAR |
Situation, Background, Assessment and Recommendation (SBAR) is a communication tool developed in 2001 by a former nuclear submariner. SBAR prompts nurses to organize and streamline information before communicating with physicians. In a recent study, an intervention including use of SBAR was shown to improve nurse-physician communication and decrease unexpected deaths. The intervention included education; a 2-day training session for unit educators and a 2-hour session for bedside nurses regarding SBAR and an additional 4-hour class on early detection of patient decompensation and critical thinking. Medical records of patients with serious adverse events were reviewed for evidence of SBAR communication. Unplanned ICU admissions increased, and unexpected deaths decreased. SBAR is an evidenced based communication tool that improves patient outcomes when used effectively.
