Manufacturing Processes in Healthcare

As healthcare quality and patient safety efforts evolve, the efficacy of interventions should be evaluated. Practices originating from the manufacturing world, and their effectiveness in the medical industry, were evaluated in an article published in JAMA Internal Medicine. In a survey of 597 hospitals, researchers scored performance in 18 widely-varying practices such as patient discharge, technology adoption and managing talent. These practices were grouped into four dimensions: standardizing care, performance monitoring, setting targets and incentivizing managers and employees.   Each of the practices was scored between 1 and 5 (the higher the better). The results? A wide distribution of management practices was found; <20% of hospitals scored 4 on more than half of the measures. The higher scoring hospitals had lower mortality and better performance on selected cardiac process of care measurements.
