Adverse Events in the ICU

Approximately 1/3 of ICU patients requiring an invasive procedure suffer at least 1 adverse event (AE) during their stay. Critically ill patients are at higher risk for AEs, due to severity of illness and the need for invasive procedures. According to this study published in the American Journal of Infection Control, the most common AEs were infections, which were significantly more common than mechanical AEs (which included complications of central venous catheters such as pneumothorax or thrombosis, and complications of mechanical ventilation such as laryngeal stridor and self-extubation). The most common AE was ventilator associated pneumonia (VAP), which overall accounted for > 60% of the deaths associated with adverse events in this population.
