Discharges in the RED
The Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality (AHRQ) recently announced an updated Project RED toolkit. The toolkit is part of the Project RED (Re Engineered Discharge) effort, a standardized approach to discharge planning developed by researchers at Boston University Medical Center. Readmissions are a significant concern in healthcare; it is estimated they cost Medicare $12 billion per year. A randomized controlled trial of the Project RED program showed a 25% decrease in 30 day readmissions, a decrease in ED utilization from 24 to 16%, and a 34% decrease in costs.
