Nurses' Perceptions
A survey co-sponsored by General Electric and the American Nurses Association addresses nurses' perceptions of patient safety. 900 nurses from the US, UK and China completed this online survey which revealed some troubling findings. 60% of nurses admit to not reporting safety concerns, fearing punishment. Only 41% consider their hospital surroundings "safe". Other barriers to safety identified by nursing are a lack of sufficient information technology and poor communication. Although the nurses reported these many safety concerns, 90% felt that nurses shouldered most of the burden for patient safety. It's not all bad news; 94% report their organization does have a patient safety program. Less than two thirds rated those programs to be effective, however.
