Veterinary Leadership Conference
An Invitation
On March 16th and 17th, 2013, please join us for an event that will allow you to put your busy life as a veterinarian aside and take the time to discover your inner leadership potential! For 10 years, the purpose of the AVMA Veterinary Leadership Experience (VLE) has been to use an interactive curriculum to encourage and promote personal transformation, strengthen ties between students, faculty and veterinarians, and hone veterinarians' intrinsic leadership potential. Thanks to our sponsorship by Merial and program coordinators at the Veterinary Leadership Institute, we are able to bring that same opportunity to Penn Vet faculty, staff, alumni, and students. The 1st Annual Penn Leadership Experience (PennLE) will help you understand the meaning of emotional intelligence, help you to become an encouraging leader and improve your skills of communication, teamwork and professionalism. PennLE will be run by Betsy Charles, executive director of the Veterinary Leadership Institute-- who runs the industry wide VLE every June, so you can expect the same unique, interactive and educational experience as VLE. The registration deadline for the event is March 1st, 2013. More specific event and registration information can be found online at: tinyurl.com/pennle2012 or on our Facebook page: www.facebook.com/PennLE. If you have any questions at all, please email us at [email protected]. March 16 (1pm-7pm) Philadelphia Campus March 17 (9am-4pm) New Bolton Campus
We hope to see you there! Stacy Bartholomew (V'15), Zachary Kern (V'14) and the

Alumni Volunteer Opportunities
This volunteer opportunity is for graduates who are interested in helping to shape the way future veterinarians spay and neuter small animals. Volunteer veterinarians will come to the Philadelphia animal shelter on a Thursday and/or Friday and supervise students through some of their first spays and neuters on dogs. A nurse and first-year rotating intern from the University of Pennsylvania will be present to help the volunteer veterinarian supervise the student surgeries and take charge of all administrative and logistical work. Volunteers will be asked to be present at the Animal Care and Control Team headquarters at 111 West Hunting Park Avenue from 9 am through 3 pm on the days they are scheduled to volunteer. If interested, please contact Jeffrey Barnet at [email protected]. . |

Howard Krum V'92 along with three classmates, Drs. Roy Yanong, Scott Moore, and Patty Hogan have written a novel inspired by their experiences as first-year veterinary students. Dr. Krum noted, "our primary goals for this book, the first in a series, are to elevate the profile of the veterinary life we love while giving back to worthy programs/causes." The group is donating a portion of the proceeds from each book sold directly to SCAVMA Chapters at Penn, University of Florida CVM, Colorado State CVM and others. The book's website is AnAnimalLife.com
Lisa H. Handy V'84, knows there's no such thing as an "ordinary" day (or night) in her practice. There are no limits to the predicaments a horse can get into, just as there is no predicting the expectations of a horse owner. But for more than twenty-five years, Dr. Lisa H. Handy has seen the incredible humor in it all - its undeniably funny side. In the end, she considers it an amazingly rewarding profession, constantly filled with surprises and plenty of horse laughs - all of which are reflected with tongue firmly in cheek throughout her new book, "Just for Kicks."
