The Effects of Mass Incarceration and How It Impacts Our Guests by
John Sheehan

John Sheehan, Social Worker

You are invited to All Souls Church, Reidy Friendship Hall to hear John Sheehan a social worker and head of our Outreach Information Systems talk about the devastating effects Mass Incarceration has had on our country and on many of our guests at Monday Night Hospitality and Friday Soup Kitchen.

John will focus on how we as a community can help people adjust to leaving prison through our meal programs and beyond.

John Sheehan is a social worker with 35 years experience and a graduate of Adelphi University with advanced training from NYU. He has extensive experience working with substance abusers, people with AIDS and the Homeless.

A focus of his clinical work has been on the Criminal Justice System, including work at Riker's Island. After becoming disabled with MS in 2006, he has done extensive volunteer work at the MS Society and started volunteering at the All Souls Meal programs.

If you would like to support the All Souls meal programs and John Sheehan's work, please donate to the Heart & Soul Charitable Fund at www.heartandsoulfund.org.

Every donation is important to support the continued work of our outreach programs.

HELPING THOSE IN NEED, WITH DIGNITY AND RESPECT

INTRODUCING NANCY YATES
VOLUNTEER COORDINATOR, MONDAY NIGHT HOSPITALITY PROGRAM

Lynn Birch, Nancy Yates, John Birch,.and Bob Horowitz
Nancy Yates started serving at Monday Night Hospitality (MNH) in 2006 through New York Cares. Since then, MNH has become a family affair for her, her husband Jeff, and their daughter Phoebe, along with her in-laws, Lynn & John Birch and her Dad, Bob Horowitz. "Helping our neighbors in need," Nancy says, "is something we can all be a part of to give back to the community." Over the years, they have made friends at MNH who have become part of their wider family circle.

Nancy and Jeff joined All Souls in 2010. Phoebe attended All Souls Pre-school, and now, as an 8-year old, loves to help set up tables before her mom serves each Monday night. One weekend in August, Phoebe wanted to set up a lemonade stand to benefit the program.

Nancy says, "When we walk around the neighborhood now, we are always running into volunteers and guests from MNH. Phoebe can see that we are all a part of the same eco-system of the city and all of us deserve the same dignity and respect. MNH helps me keep that sentiment alive in our daily lives."

Recently, Nancy has taken on a much larger role within MNH, helping George Collins manage the hall each Monday and coordinating volunteers. She has put the weekly sign-up online with Volunteer Spot to track volunteers, send them communications, and keep them in the loop for much needed fundraising for the program.

Nancy says that her favorite thing about serving on Monday Nights is the feeling that she is helping bridge the gap between the haves and the have-nots of our city. "Our work is never done. We serve more guests every week and I hope we can continue raising the money we need to keep this vital program alive and well."

Hello from the President of the Heart & Soul Charitable Fund

Welcome to the 2015-2016 year for Heart & Soul which funds seven community outreach programs: Monday Night Hospitality, Friday Soup Kitchen, The Navigators, The Girl Scouts of East Harlem, Outreach Information Services, Musica Viva Outreach, and the New Amsterdam Boys and Girls Choir.

MNH alone served over 400 meals on a recent Monday night. In this newsletter we are focusing on Nancy Yates, a dedicated volunteer at MNH, and John Sheehan, who will be speaking at All Souls on Sunday, Sept. 27th, about the work he does at the All Souls meal programs. If you are available, please join us.

Please help us to support these fabulous programs as they continue to grow and expand. We appreciate donations at any time of the year at www.heartandsoulfund.org.
