Tampa City Council Approves Resolution Asking for U.S.-Cuba Agreement to be Signed in Tampa
The Tampa City Council voted Thursday to approve a resolution supporting Tampa as the site for the agreement normalizing relations between the United States and Cuba, and to call the agreement, "The Tampa Accord." Tampa City Councilmember Yvonne Yolie Capin presented the resolution, which calls for the restoration of diplomatic ties between the United States and Cuba to be formalized in Tampa based on the century of shared history between Tampa and Cuba. In the late 1800s and early 1900s, thousands of Cubans moved to Tampa, and Cuban hero Jose Marti often traveled to Tampa to rally support for Cuban independence from Spain.
The Greater Tampa Chamber of Commerce provided a letter in support of the resolution. The Chamber also supported the City Council's previous resolution endorsing Tampa as the site of a Cuban Consulate when there is a normalization of diplomatic relations.
