Congresswoman Castor Invites Former Chamber Chair Jose Valiente as State of the Union Guest

Business leader and past chair of the Greater Tampa Chamber of Commerce, Jose Valiente, attended President Obama's sixth State of the Union address as a special guest of Congresswoman Kathy Castor on Tuesday, January 20.

Valiente, who was born in a small town outside Havana, Cuba and came to the United States at age 12, supported the embargo until 2003. "I realized that if the intent of the embargo was to bring change to Cuba, it has failed, because nothing has changed," he told the Tampa Bay Times in 2011. As Chamber Chair, Valiente worked with U.S. Rep. Castor to open Tampa International Airport as an entry/exit point for charter flights to Cuba, highlighting the economic boost and jobs this would create for Tampa. He also spearheaded a groundbreaking cultural exchange between the Florida Orchestra and the Cuban National Orchestra in 2011.

Citing the need for engagement as a way to help the people of Cuba, Valiente supported U.S. Rep. Castor when she was the first member of Congress from Florida to call for modernization of the longstanding ban on traveling to Cuba and lifting of the embargo.

Startup Scholars Feature: Hannah's Shoebox

When Colette Glover-Hannah couldn't find cute kids' shoes to fit her 6-year-old daughter, the idea of Hannah's Shoebox was born.

"After years of frustration in finding age-appropriate shoes for my daughter whose shoe size has matched her age since age six, and hearing the same despair from other parents, I decided to create something to eliminate this challenge," Glover-Hannah said.

Hannah's Shoebox is the only retailer to exclusively offer age-appropriate shoes to preteen and 'tween girls who wear larger women's sizes. The online store offers a variety of styles including boots, flats, dressy/casual sandals and those hard to find special occasion shoes with heels below two inches. Read more...

2015 Bay Area Mayors Conference

On January 28, Bay Area mayors, business leaders and representatives of the health care industry will gather together for "Cover the Bay: 2015 Bay Area Mayors Conference" at St. Petersburg's Mahaffey Theater. They will discuss a collaborative approach to extending health care coverage to more uninsured Bay Area residents. Hosted by City of Tampa Mayor Bob Buckhorn, City of St. Petersburg Mayor Rick Kriseman, City of Clearwater Mayor George Cretekos and A Healthy Florida Works, the event will provide an in-depth look at what coverage means for the Bay Area's people, businesses and economy. Leaders will also discuss Florida's opportunity to support a state-specific plan that can dramatically cut the costs of uncompensated care, take full advantage of the federal funds set aside for coverage, enable businesses to create more jobs, and improve the health of more than 136,000 low-income, working Bay Area residents.

Join local mayors and fellow business and community leaders to take part in the conversation about how the Bay Area can move the extension of health care coverage forward. There is no cost to attend. Reserve your seat online at www.CovertheBayEvent.com
