The Spirit of Service: An Influential Day with Barbara Bush
Barbara Pierce Bush and Former First Lady Barbara Bush captivate the crowd with their heartfelt sentiments
 | | Barbara Pierce Bush (right) with moderator Gayle Sierens of WFLA News Channel 8. |
Barbara Pierce Bush walked up to the stage almost in tears after a sweet introduction from her sister, Jenna Bush Hager, who unfortunately couldn't join us yesterday. Laughing from the jokes about her grandmother "the enforcer" Barbara Bush, Barbara Pierce Bush began her ever-so elegant speech about her work with Global Health Corps. Barbara was inspired to make a difference by traveling the world with her parents over the years, and after graduating college, she did just that. Barbara founded Global Health Corps with a team of six twenty-somethings who met through a summit focused on engaging young people in the future of global health in 2008. She spoke to us about the work and accomplishments they have had over the years and how this partnership has changed her life. She truly believes that the millennial generation has the power to change the global health world.
As if we didn't love technology already, our focus shifted upward to the screens where we were privileged to have a live video chat with Former First Lady Barbara Bush from her Texas home. Mrs. Bush was overjoyed by her granddaughter's speech and the work she has done with Global Health Corps. She also spoke about her primary cause throughout the years, promoting literacy. She is passionate in her belief that everyone has the right to read and that so many of our nation's problems would be solved if more people could read, write and comprehend. Mrs. Bush and Barbara both talked about their time in the White House and touched on the normalcy of their everyday lives, but also the craziness that comes from having a father and husband as President of the United States. Special thanks to our presenting sponsor PNC Bank, and to all our attendees for joining us at the largest Women of Influence luncheon yet! |

Chief Castor has also been recognized by the National Association of Women Law Enforcement Executives as "Law Enforcement Executive of the Year." She is a member of multiple community boards including Trinity Charter School and Hillsborough House of Hope and recently spearheaded efforts to secure donations to design and build a new Police Athletic League Facility. Leadership Tampa's Economic Development Day
A generation or two ago, Economic Development looked like steam and soot, steel and ships. But today's economic engine is powered not by sweat equity, but by information and ingenuity. This "New World Economy," as University of Tampa President Ron Vaughn called it, is built on the brains of "knowledge workers" instead of the backs of the laborers.
Such was the message during our recent Leadership Tampa Economic Development Day, where our class got to meet some of the minds guiding Tampa into its next chapter and witness first-hand the type of cutting-edge business thinking that will form the city's future. Read more >>
