Tampa Mayor set to give his annual address to Chamber membership on March 27

Mayor Buckhorn will be placed on the proverbial hot seat and asked questions on behalf of the local business community. Votility: New Advocacy Software

This year has already been a successful one for our policy efforts, as Tampa International Airport has secured state funding for the first phase of their master plan and county funding has been secured for High Speed Ferry Service. With other issues related to education, flood insurance, and health care on the horizon, the Chamber has added a new tool to use in engaging our members to support our legislative agenda.

Very soon, we will introduce you to Votility, our new advocacy portal that puts you one click away from researching the legislation the Chamber is tracking and contacting your representatives in Tallahassee and Washington. As a member, you will be able to read each bill, leave a comment or send an email in support or opposition, all in one place. Votility will improve your ability to make your voice heard and help the Chamber communicate our business community's views.

Invitations for Votility have gone out! Make sure you check your inbox. If you are a Chamber member and you have not received an invite, please contact Michael Maurino at mmaurino@tampachamber.com.
"Hope" - Leadership Tampa's Health Sciences Day
By Jill Witecki, Tampa Theatre

We hadn't been with our M2Gen tour guide for five minutes when I knew that I was in over my head. What was I thinking, having volunteered to write the Health Sciences Day blog post? As our guide described the process of mapping genomes as casually as one might describe last night's dinner plans, I frantically scribbled notes, spelling most of the medical terms phonetically in hopes that I might be able to look them up (and understand them better) later.

What is "fluorescence in situ hybridization" again? And as we moved through the morning - me with an high school-level understanding of basic biology and a few seasons of "House" on Netflix; our presenters with their PhDs and plans to cure cancer with science some of which hadn't even been invented yet when I was in school - I worried about how I was going to make any sense of the experience on paper.
But then we broke into groups at Moffitt Cancer Center, and chance saw fit to sort me into the "Arts in Medicine" group. Picking up a watercolor brush sparked for me the figurative brush strokes with which Health Sciences Day needed to be painted: what was important wasn't so much the science as it was this group of people who have dedicated themselves to being the patient's best hope.
