Women's Series Panelists Share Recipes for Success
On Friday our Women of Influence Committee welcomed four outstanding female leaders from the Tampa food scene to our third Women's Series Luncheon of 2013, "La crème de la crème: How women are rising to the top of the food industry." Maryann Ferenc (Mise en Place), Jeannie Pierola (edison: food + drink lab), Suzanne Perry (Datz / Dough) and Lisa Schalk (Toffee to Go) shared words of wisdom and funny anecdotes about their personal paths to success as attendees dined on dishes provided by each of the panelists. While some of the women were born into the world of food service, others found their way as they went, learning from themselves, their partners, and their customers. As Chef Pierola put it, "People will tell you everything you want to know and everything you don't want to know about a dish. Everyone is an expert on what they like." Ferenc shared some of her secrets to success, including keeping popular items on the menu long after the chef grows tired of making them. The women also spoke about next steps for each of their businesses. Schalk of Toffee to Go plans on shipping up to 5,000 packages a day in the month of December, and Perry of Datz has her hands full with their recently opened bakery addition, Dough. Attendees walked away from this sold-out event with full stomachs and a deepened appreciation of what it takes to make your mark as a woman in the business of food. |

Competitive Edge Series: Storying
Tuesday, November 19, 2013 | 11:45 a.m. - 1:30 p.m.
Greater Tampa Chamber of Commerce, 201 North Franklin Street
Bob Allen's "Storying" is a practical, informative and light-hearted exploration of a critical practice that may eclipse budgeting, marketing, sales and production in the networked economy. When a story is not deliberately told, the human minds in the audience make up their own stories in order to organize reality and fill in the gap. Without a deliberately codified and articulated story, there is no "true north."
Attendees can expect to learn: the mechanisms of good storying, the components of a powerful story, the pitfall of the "story sandwich" and some brain science behind the power of a story. Free for FIT Two, $35 for Chamber members and $50 for non-members. Click here to register.
