July 2016
Greetings!

Summertime conjures up memories of childhood for many of us, the carefree days of youth spent in the great outdoors. Having a beautiful garden to enjoy with family and friends can create that same sense of magic. A garden pathway to explore with grandchildren. A pond with a bubbling fountain to soothe the worries of the day.  A patio surrounded by lush green plantings for an evening supper. A hideaway where birds and butterflies, toads and dragonflies, creatures of many kinds find refuge.

This month we highlight a trio of green-foliaged trees. Next month we hold our second fundraiser of the season to benefit Heifer International and Mano a Mano International. If you're looking for inspiration and ideas, a garden walk, a stroll through someone else's creation, offers just that. See our links below for July and August garden events.

RFWP has an extensive inventory of container and b&b stock ready for planting anytime. Please call 815-338-7442 or email us with any tree availability questions. We are happy to check our inventory. We welcome garden clubs to tour our nursery. Be sure to schedule your visit now.

Green Gems

This month's three featured trees are truly gems that will work in smaller garden spaces.

Ginkgo biloba 'Jade Butterfly'

The ancient lineage of ginkgos extends back almost 200 million years, and they once flourished around the world. The current distribution in the wild is limited to a small area in China, but Ginkgo biloba has been grown in temple gardens in Japan and Korea for centuries. Numerous cultivars of this hardy and durable tree are available. A vase-shaped ginkgo with leaves reminiscent of butterly wings, 'Jade Butterfly' grows 4-5 feet every ten years and thrives in full sun.

Pinus strobus 'Macopin'

Cultivars of Pinus strobus (Eastern white pine) come in many shapes and sizes, from tall fastigiate and graceful pendulous to low mounding forms. 'Macopin' is a broad upright and irregular tree with a slow growth rate. This charming soft-needled pine develops cones on fairly young trees.

Fagus sylvatica 'Dawyck'

European beeches are favored for their leaf shapes, gray mottled bark and a variety of growth habits. Fagus sylvatica 'Dawyck' (pronounced "Doik") is a columnar form with elliptical green leaves. It grows about 6'every ten years and prefers full sun. This elegant tree with a narrow footprint is perfect for any size yard.
