Greetings!

The parades and fireworks of 4th of July are over, and high summer is upon us.  So far we've had more than enough rain for in-ground trees, but keep an eye on the rain gage as the season progresses. If we don't get at least an inch of rain a week, then it's time to do some supplemental watering. And if you have container trees, they will need more frequent watering, especially when the temperatures hit the 90s. Now as you enjoy your garden and contemplate additions or changes, take some photos and measurements and come out to RFWP. We'll help you select just the right trees and shrubs. Call 815-338-7442 to make an appointment.

Picea omorika 'Blue Sky' is a blue-green Serbian spruce that forms a narrow pyramid.

Straight & Narrow

Narrow garden spaces offer an opportunity to highlight elegant  columnar trees. These narrow trees typically grow either with branches angling up almost vertically from the trunk, or with the branches weeping or hanging very low and close to the trunk.

Chamaecyparis nootkatensis 'Van den Akker' is one of the columnar Nootka False Cypresses.  With its spire-like form and "skirt" of foliage at the  base, this lovely tree makes quite a statement in the garden. Another conifer with skirt-like branching is Picea glauca 'Pendula'. This graceful narrow pyramid has layers of branches resembling a tiered hoop skirt.  Thuja occidentalis 'Degroot's Spire' is a classic slender column, perfect as a single vertical accent, as paired sentinels at the garden gate, or as a hedge or grouping.  Ginkgos also come in narrower selections, such as Ginkgo biloba 'Princeton Sentry' and 'Saratoga'.

Fagus sylvatica cultivars such as 'Dawyck', 'Dawyck Purple''Dawyck Gold', and 'Red Obelisk' all make incredible verticle accents. Choose between red/purple, green, or gold leaves on trees with very upright branching habits. As with any European beech, the beautiful mottled grey bark becomes more distinctive as the tree matures.

Among the narrow baldcypress cultivars, Taxodium distichum 'Novum Pendulum' displays low hanging weeping branches whereas 'Lindsey's Skyward' holds its branches stiff and tight to the trunk. This deciduous conifer's bare winter silhouette adds a unique element to the landscape.
