Greetings!

Just a few weeks until Thanksgiving.  Fall colors have been quite stunning in sections of the nursery, with crimson, gold, burnt orange, copper and amber against a backdrop of greens and blues.  We're busy finishing up projects and soon will start getting the nursery ready for winter.  We still have small conifers to perk up those outdoor holiday planters.  Call 815-338-7442 if you'd like to make an appointment to tag trees.  And as we start looking toward spring, please let us know what trees and shrubs are on your WISH LIST.  We're always happy to help you find those special plants.

Have a happy and safe Thanksgiving holiday!

 Tsuga canadensis

Canadian hemlock (Tsuga canadensis) is a beautiful soft-needled conifer with a native distribution range across eastern North America. It is also called the Eastern Hemlock. It prefers cool moist woodland-like conditions, and will not tolerate salt, air pollution or extreme winds.  Good soil drainage is critical for hemlocks. They tolerate pruning better than many other conifers. The fine-textured foliage and drooping branch tips make this broadly conical tree a stunning specimen for any garden.

Tsuga canadensis 'Pendula'

The most awe-inspiring cultivars of Tsuga canadensis are the weeping forms.  Staked to a height of 8-10' and then allowed to cascade and grow, 'Pendula' can be a stand-alone specimen or grace the edge of a water feature. 'Sargentii', 'Kelsey's Weeping' and 'Ashfield Weeper' are also pendulous cultivars.

Tsuga canadensis 'Albo-spica' cones

For a bit of brightness in the garden, hemlocks come in white-tipped forms.  'Gentsch White' is a mounding form, and 'Albo-spica' is more upright.  The upright pyramidal 'New Gold' offers a touch of yellow in the spring.

Some cultivars have stiff branches, like the upright 'Lewis'.  The dwarf 'Youngcone' bears cones when it's only 5-6 years old.  'Cappy's Choice' is a dwarf prostrate form and 'Jeddeloh' has a mounding bird's nest shape.

Tsuga canadensis cultivars are a great addition to any garden.  And if space permits, a majestic species hemlock would be perfect.
