Greetings!
We hope you are enjoying the beautiful fall weather. Always keep in mind that if we don't get a good rain once a week, you should continue to water your trees until the ground freezes. We recommend a thorough watering once a week, equivalent to one inch of rain. This is the time of year when some conifers start to drop old interior needles, and it looks particularly alarming in white pines. Please give us a call at 815-338-7442 if you have any concerns about your trees.

Pinus strobus ________________________________________________
Pinus strobus (Eastern White PIne) has a distribution range extending from northeastern Canada to the upper Midwest and south along the Appalachian mountains. It grows to towering heights and was once the main source for ship masts. This five-needled pine grows in full sun to part shade and does not tolerate road salt.
Not every garden can accommodate the massive proportions of the species, but numerous cultivars of Pinus strobus can fit into the home landscape. 'Fastigiata' is a narrower form but will grow quite tall, making a fantastic statement in the garden.

Most impressive are the various weeping forms, which lend an air of elegance and grace to any garden. When staked to a good height, Pinus strobus 'Pendula' can grow horizontally and then sweep down toward the ground. It develops character as it ages, with branches reaching out in different directions. Each tree is a unique specimen.

Some cultivars have been selected for shorter twisted needles. Pinus strobus 'Contorta' forms a large specimen, growing 7' or more every 10 years. The more diminutive 'Mini Twists' is a witches' broom of 'Contorta' and has a much slower growth rate of 3'/10 years.

Dwarf mounding forms include 'Blue Shag', 'Horsford', 'Sea Urchin' and others. Although dwarf in proportion to the species, given time a 'Blue Shag' can become a specimen 10' tall and 10' wide. For added interest these dwarf forms are also grown on a standard.
