Greetings!

Here we are at the beginning of March, with a snowstorm in the weather forecast and more cold days ahead.  But that will all melt soon and then we can begin working in our gardens.  We're looking forward to the Chicago Flower & Garden Show, which starts this Saturday, March 9th.  It's always fun to introduce the public to trees they've never seen before.  If you have trees on order for spring, we will begin contacting you to schedule pickups or deliveries as soon as the ground is workable.  Keep an eye on the Updates section of our website calendar for any news of new trees arriving.  We are ready to help you with your tree selections.

The Art of Gardening

March 9-17, 2013

"The Art of Gardening"

Visit Navy Pier and get inspired by glorious gardens.  There are workshops, demonstrations
and seminars every day.

Living Art in the Garden, created by Rich's Foxwillow Pines, will feature some of the most abstract trees. Multiple vignettes will highlight funky and formal display pieces, including rusted metal creatures in one, a whimsical village in another, and Shona art in the third.  The garden incorporates conifers with bicolor foliage, species that turn brilliant yellow in winter, extreme weeping specimens, conifers with twisted-looking needles, and plants that span a wide color spectrum.

Visit Booth #628/630 and learn more about the work we do with Heifer International to end world hunger. Also learn about the work that Mano a Mano International Partners is doing in rural Bolivia.  There will be hostas for sale to benefit Heifer, as well as arts and crafts to benefit Mano a Mano.

"Inspirational Gardens"
Rich Eyre will be doing a seminar at the show
Saturday, March 16th at 11:30am.
Check the show website for details.

Metasequoia glyptostroboides
 Dawn Redwood

One of the few deciduous conifers, Metasequoia gylptostroboides is eye-catching with its soft green foliage.  Today this tree, the sole living member of the genus, occurs in the wild in a limited range in China in the Sichuan-Hubei region. The Metasequoia genus was once widespread across the Northern Hemisphere, and the fossil record dates back to the Late Cretaceous.

Foliage of Metasequoia glytpostroboides 'North Light'

In the fall dawn redwoods turn brilliant shades of yellow and orange, and then shed all their needles. Their winter silhouettes offer glimpses of the branching structure, cones and buds. A solitary upright Metasequoia glyptostroboides shimmering on a frosty morning is a breathtaking site. By spring the entire tree is covered in new light green growth which is very soft to the touch.
Cultivars have been selected for foliage color and form.  'Ogon' has golden foliage and is also known as 'Gold Rush'.  The narrower green form 'Miss Grace' has pendulous branches. There is also a dwarf rounded form called 'North Light'.  Any one of these would add a bit of flash to the garden.
