Greetings!

We hope everyone is getting their gardens ready for winter, and that you continue to water your plants until the ground freezes.  We will be closing up our hoop houses at the end of November, so if you're still looking for that one last container plant, give us a  call or come on out soon.  Be sure to check the Calendar Page on our website for any updates to our schedule and for any holiday closings.  If you're planning on planting trees next spring, now is a great time to come out and tag some trees.  Call us at 815-338-7442 if you have any questions or concerns.

Happy Thanksgiving from everyone at RFWP!

Garden Tours

We're looking for gardens in the Chicago area to include in garden tours next year and beyond.   We know there must be some hidden gems with great conifers!  If you'd like to be considered, please contact us and include some photos of your garden.

Abies koreana

A fir native to Korea, Abies koreana is a popular garden tree, with cultivars in various colors and shapes.  A striking feature of Korean firs in the spring is the flashy cone, with colors spanning purple to blue hues.  As in all firs, the cones perch upright on the branches, clustered toward the top of the tree.  In our zone, these firs do best when they are protected from the hot afternoon sun.  They prefer well-drained soil and a layer of coarse bark mulch.

Upright forms offer several color options.  Abies koreana 'Aurea' gives the garden some gorgeous golden tones. For a touch of blue 'Glauca' is an excellent choice.  The distinctive recurved needles of 'Silberlocke' and 'Silver Show' expose the white undersides of the otherwise green needles.  One of the best Korean firs for spectacular cones is 'Nanaimo'.  The purple cones are very eye-catching.

Mound-shaped or low and spreading forms of Abies koreana also sport colorful cones.  'Green Carpet' is a vivid green form that starts as a small mound and then spreads out gradually through the years.  'Cis' forms a small green mound with dense foliage.  For rock gardens, troughs or other containers, there are several miniature forms to choose from:  'Tundra', 'Silberkugel', 'Silberperl' and 'Silberzwerg'. (You may need your German dictionary for some names. "Kugel" means bun, "perl" is pearl, and "zwerg" is dwarf.)   The dwarf yellow form  'Golden Dream'  ('Goldener Traum') offers a nice contrast with green and blue foliaged conifers.

Here are some of Susan Eyre's new favorites.

One of the most eye-catching of the miniatures with a profusion of tiny red cones in spring.

Lovely blue color makes this slow-growing spruce perfect for rock gardens.

A most unusual yew with rounded needles.
