Greetings!

Brisk fall days are quite a nice change from the summer heat and drought that we endured.  But don't think that because it's cooler out, that you should stop watering your trees and shrubs.  The ground is still parched and hard to dig in.  Please continue to water your trees and shrubs thoroughly once a week until the ground freezes.  They need the equivalent of 1" rain per week.  Plants are still stressed from the drought,  so be sure to water everything planted in the last few years.  Call us at 815-338-7442 if you have any questions or concerns.

Picea omorika    ---    Serbian Spruce

Picea omorika is native to a small area in southeastern Europe, near the Drina River in Serbia and Bosnia and Herzegovina.  Low population numbers in a restricted range have put the Serbian Spruce on the IUCN Red List as endangered.  In cultivation since the late 19th century, this pyramidal tree has a narrower profile than Picea abies.  Dark green needles with white undersides, purple cone clusters, and slightly pendulous branches with upturned tips make this spruce a great addition to any sunny garden.

Picea omorika 'Pendula'
with young purple cones and older brown cones.
The two-tone needles give a blue-green effect.

There are some very unique cultivars of Picea omorika suitable for smaller spaces.  Create drama with one of the narrow pendulous forms.  The graceful 'Pendula' has drooping branches with upturned tips.  The slower growing 'Pendula Bruns' has extremely pendulous branches and a narrow form with the leader growing at a slightly oblique angle.  'Berliner's Weeper' is another option for a narrower Serbian spruce. A new very blue form called 'Blue Sky' has heavier needles than other cultivars.   Dwarf forms of Picea omorika include rounded pyramidal forms ('Nana') and tiny globes ('Minima').

Here are some of Rich Eyre's new favorites.

 Ginkgo biloba 'Mariken'
A charming dwarf ginkgo that only grows two feet every ten years.

This Norway spruce is also called 'Big Wave' for the undulating branches.

Pinus strobus 'Angel Falls'
Cascading branches create a stunning effect on this Eastern white pine.
