PFC Hudock Earns First NTI Win at 2016 National Trophy Pistol Matches

CAMP PERRY, Ohio - In a tight National Trophy Individual (NTI) Pistol Match, fired on July 17, PFC Christopher Hudock, 26, of the Army Marksmanship Unit (AMU), received his name on the General Custer Trophy as the overall winner by finishing strong in the last stage of the event - earning the win by his rapid fire score of 99-7x.
At the end of the match, PFC Hudock was left tied with MSG Robert Mango, 42, of the U.S. Army Reserve team, with a score of 292-15x. In the result of a tie, the rapid fire scores are compared, with PFC Hudock firing just two x's above MSG Mango.

Reiter Becomes First Quadruple Distinguished Badge Marksman

CAMP PERRY, Ohio - Steve Reiter, 74, of Tucson, AZ, has become the first Quadruple Distinguished marksman in history. Reiter received his most recent Distinguished Badge at the 2016 National Trophy Pistol Matches at Camp Perry - earning the new .22 Rimfire Pistol Badge, which has only been in existence since 2015.

Before that, Reiter had earned his Pistol Distinguished Badge in 1972, International Badge in 1973 and his Rifle Distinguished Badge in 1998. Through the years, he has competed in free pistol, standard pistol, air pistol and centerfire events as well as rifle.

"It's a big honor, really. When you're the first at anything, it's a big honor," he said. "Most people don't understand how much work it is. And it being a CMP badge . . . it means something."

Chichkov Wins for Third Year During National Match Air Pistol Events

CAMP PERRY, Ohio - While the National Trophy Pistol Matches fired under the hot July sun on the ranges outdoors, things were also heating up within the Gary Anderson CMP Competition Center as the National Match Air Gun events began. A variety of air gun opportunities were offered to competitors, including 60 Shot and 30 Shot air pistol matches as well as 20 Shot Re-entry and Bench matches for sporter, precision and AiR15 rifles. Winning the overall 60 Shot Air Pistol Match was Alexander Chichkov, 22, of Tampa, FL, who fired a score of 575-17x. No stranger to the event, Chichkov had previously won the match in 2014 and 2015 and earned the High Junior title in 2012, 2013 and 2014.

CMP Supports 4-H Shooting Sports
CMP Supports 4-H Shooting Sports. The CMP annually supports 4-H Shooting Sports. Below are Thank Yous from State 4-H Shooting Sports Coordinators.

Illinois 4-H Shooting Sports:
Illinois is in its sixth year of the 4-H Shooting Sports program. Growth has been very strong in all phases of the program, which includes: volunteer recruitment and training; addition of the new Hunting and Outdoor Skills discipline; 4-H member enrollment; obtaining shooting equipment and shooting sites for county programs; and, adding new training opportunities when so deemed necessary.

Over the past five years and more, the following has occurred in the Illinois 4-H Shooting Sports program: approximately 800 different adult volunteers have been trained/certified (of the 800, over 150 have returned to a different weekend training to become certified in additional discipline/s); 96 of Illinois' 102 counties are now "eligible" to have the program in their respective counties; last year's Illinois 4-H enrollment was approximately 2,800 enrolled 4-H members, taking approximately 5,100 4-H projects in the Shooting Sports arena. For the adult volunteers and 4-H member enrollment, a steady/huge increase of 25 percent per year for adult volunteers and 20 percent per year for 4-H enrollment has been demonstrated. Illinois has overtaken 12 states in the number of trained adult volunteers and 4-H member enrollment in the over five years. Some of the 12 state have been in the program for more than 20 years.

Overall planning, organizing and implementation of the adult volunteer certification trainings are a very important part of the program. Two trainings were held this past year, adding 132 new adult certified volunteers. Also, many of the counties are now using the opportunity for utilizing assistant adult volunteers, which are in the hundreds, statewide. These trainings offer approximately 16 hours of training for the volunteers. Evaluations of the training are always top notch.

Our certification trainings teach our primary philosophy, and that is to provide youth the opportunity to gain life skills by being taught by a caring/trained adult. Sometimes it's hard for some of the volunteers to grasp this concept, but eventually "they get it," as you hear them discussing it during free time. Advanced training in both the archery and rifle disciplines will either be offered this 4-H program year or the next. During this 4-H training, the instructors will teach the participants a number of skills including: advanced competition, advanced equipment and advanced instructor capabilities. Due to the continued high numbers of our State Trainings, we will need to offer the advanced trainings in rifle and archery on a different weekend.

Illinois will be adding the pistol discipline to the Fall 2016 Certification training as we sent four adults to be trained at the 4-H Shooting Sports Pistol National Training in Bryant Pond, Maine, in June 2016.

Without the continued support of organizations like CMP, NRA, NWTF, Pheasants and Quail Forever, etc., our county 4-H programs would not be able to keep up with the youth who want to join the 4-H Shooting Sports Program.

Wyandotte County competitive shooting coach teaches kids gun safety and marksmanship
- By Eliza Davidson, Channel 41, KSHB, Kansas City - WYANDOTTE COUNTY, Kan. - How much do you know about competitive shooting? Probably not as much as the kids coached by Ron Paterson. His daughter, Lydia Paterson, will be going to the 2016 Olympics in Rio to compete in pistol shooting. Read the complete article.

Scholastic shooting championships give young athletes a shot at a title - By Mary Morgan Edwards, The Columbus Dispatch - From a distance, the young athletes and their families could have been participating in big-time club-sports tournament Saturday, with crowds of people and colorful team banners and concessions tents outlined against a stunning blue sky. But, get closer, and the steady pop-pop-pop of shotgun fire, plus sponsor banners for Glock and Ruger instead of Nike, plus ear protection and safety glasses instead of shinguards, made it clear this wasn't a typical youth-sports shindig. The Scholastic Shooting Sports Foundation brought its national championship event to the Cardinal Shooting Center in Morrow County all last week, culminating in an all-day competition Saturday.
